Renting in the Algarve hits €20.8/m², up 15.2% in a year

Renting a home in the Algarve cost €20.8 per square metre in September, up 15.2% on the same month last year — the largest regional rise in the whole country — according to idealista's rental price index, leaving the Algarve Portugal's second most expensive region to rent behind the Lisbon metropolitan area (€22/m²). Within the region the picture is split: Portimão recorded the biggest annual jump (+26.8%, now the most expensive municipality at €20.3/m²) and Silves rose 4.8%, while Tavira (−23.3%), Faro (−12.6%) and Loulé (−2.3%) all fell. Nationally, rents rose 6.1% over the year to €18.3/m².

How a nearly-empty village found new life in the Algarve

Aldeia da Pedralva, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, came close to disappearing: a village that was home to more than a hundred people in the 1960s emptied out until barely a handful of residents remained. Seven Algarve councils propose €105m for social housing

Seven Algarve municipalities — Lagos, Vila do Bispo, Portimão, Tavira, São Brás de Alportel, Castro Marim and Alcoutim — have submitted 11 applications to the Algarve 2030 programme to build, rehabilitate or convert buildings for social housing, a combined investment of more than €105 million. The bids were filed under the Aviso Algarve-2026-13 notice, which supports the municipalities' Local Housing Strategies to grow public housing supply in a region where access to housing is flagged by the regional programme itself as one of the biggest challenges.

Algarve tourism revenue climbs 5.8% to €384.9m in August

The Algarve led the country's key tourism profitability indicators during peak season, with accommodation revenue rising 5.8% year-on-year in August 2026 to €384.9 million — above the national average — according to Turismo do Algarve citing INE data. Revenue per available room (RevPAR) reached €180, the highest in Portugal, and the region accounted for 36.3% of all tourism revenue generated nationally that month. Some 770,000 guests and 3.27 million overnight stays (both up 1.3% YoY) set a new post-pandemic record for August, with international markets (+1.8%) outpacing domestic (+0.4%).

Turismo do Algarve launches Make In Algarve with 50 experiences

Turismo do Algarve has launched Make In Algarve, a digital platform bringing together around 50 cultural and creative tourism experiences — guided tours, workshops, tastings and craft sessions across gastronomy, arts and crafts, history and culture. Searchable by experience type, category and municipality, it is available in Portuguese for now, with English and Spanish versions to follow, and was developed with the region's 16 municipalities under the INOVA Algarve 3.0 project. President André Gomes said it invites visitors 'to stop being mere spectators and take part'.

Government invests €32m in beach sand replenishment and cliffs

Environment minister Maria da Graça Carvalho announced a €32 million investment to replenish sand and stabilise cliffs on beaches across the Algarve, as well as to restructure the Quarteira breakwaters to reduce coastal erosion to the east. The funding is split across five interventions, the largest in Albufeira at €16 million — covering about 8.5 kilometres of beach including Peneco, Forte de São João, Praia da Falésia and Rocha Baixinha — with a further €4.5 million earmarked for the Quarteira moles.

New Algarve Loja do Cidadão already handles 2,000 requests

The new Loja do Cidadão in Olhão was officially opened on 28 September, bringing four essential public services — the Tax and Customs Authority, Social Security, the Registry and Notary Institute and an Espaço Cidadão — into the Ria Shopping centre. The 713 m² facility with 15 service desks is the 82nd unit of its kind in the country and represented an investment of about €1.9 million, fully financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). In the two weeks before the official ceremony it had already handled nearly 2,000 requests, and it forms part of roughly €40 million in PRR funds allocated to Olhão.

IPMA has confirmed that summer 2026 was the third hottest on record, marked by two heatwaves that left the Algarve in drought. The second heatwave (29 June–11 July) was the third-longest national heat episode on record — up to 13 days — with the greatest magnitude since 1981 for a June-starting event, and the Sagres station spent six days in heatwave conditions. Rainfall was near normal nationally but critically scarce in the Sotavento Algarve, where Olhão recorded just 0.7 mm over the entire summer — 8% of its average and the lowest figure in mainland Portugal.

Archaeology days return to Tavira's municipal library

The Archaeology Group of the Algarve Museums Network (RMA) is holding its Jornadas Arqueológicas 2026 on 8 and 9 October at the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library in Tavira. Organised with Património Cultural I.P., the CCDR Algarve Culture Unit and the University of the Algarve, the event presents archaeological work carried out in the region since 2020, from preventive interventions to multi-year research projects, with sessions organised by sub-region (Southern Coast, Barrocal, Serra, Costa Vicentina and Baixo Guadiana) in chronological order. Loulé becomes the capital of early music for a month

Loulé is once again transforming itself into a capital of classical and early music throughout October, hosting the XXVI Encontro de Música Antiga de Loulé – Francisco Rosado (its 26th edition). The festival offers free-entry concerts at 19:00 in churches and emblematic venues across the municipality, with a repertoire spanning the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque crossed with contemporary approaches.
